They’re also an incredible blessing – but there’s no getting away from the fact that they zap all of your energy, which is why getting a good night’s sleep every night is so, so important. When you’re a mamma, it’s crucial that you are consistently getting a good night’s sleep. Otherwise, you won’t have the energy to go about your normal day and keep up with your little rascals.

Sleep studies have shown that people who tend to sleep well most nights – we all have off nights – tend to be happier, have a better memory, weigh a healthier weight, and also have a lower risk of a range of health problems.
While there are a lot of different factors that can impact how well you sleep, from what you eat to how much exercise you do, one of the most common causes of getting a bad night’s sleep is the room that you’re sleeping in. You may not realise it, but your bedroom could be the cause of your insomnia, so it’s worthwhile taking steps to make it a more sleep-friendly place, ensuring that you are able to get all the sleep that you need. The question is, how should you go about doing that?
It’s difficult to wind down and relax when you’re surrounded by all sorts of mess, from clothing to exercise equipment. So, the first step to creating a more sleep-friendly bedroom is reducing the amount of clutter that’s in there. Having a clear out might take time and may be somewhat stressful, but once you’ve done it, you will feel a sense of relief. Spend a couple of hours in your bedroom going through everything, from your clothes to your books, seeing if there is anything in there that you can get rid of. Or, if you can’t get rid of an item, find a way to store it out of sight, so that your bedroom at least feels less cluttered and more minimalistic. Think about it, hotel rooms that are made for comfort are always minimalistic, as are spas that are made to provide relaxation – this shows just how important a clutter free space is for relaxing and getting a good night’s sleep.
Pick calming colors
Believe it or not, the color scheme that’s in place in your bedroom can impact how easily you are able to fall asleep. This is because each color comes with its own effect on our moods and energy levels. That’s why it’s so important to pick the perfect colors for your bedroom retreat, to ensure that it’s a space that’s as tranquil and relaxing as possible. Studies have shown that natural tones – think earthy brown, seafoam blue, and moss green, tend to be the most calming. However, the colors that you choose to implement in your bedroom are up to you – you need to pick hues that make you feel happy, calm and relaxed. If you’re not a fan of natural colors, pastel hues could be a good option – think lavender, candy floss pink, and creamy lemon.
Keep it electronic-free
It’s no secret that watching TV, scrolling through your social media feeds, or playing computer games before bed can have a big impact on your sleep. And yet, far too many of us still continue to lay in bed watching TV or scrolling through our phones. Technology keeps your brain alert, meaning that falling asleep becomes that much more difficult when you’ve been staring at a screen. So, if you want to get a good night’s sleep, it’s important to make your bedroom an electronics-free zone. Whatever you do, don’t put a TV in your bedroom, and aim to shut your smartphone in a drawer beside the bed as soon as you lay down. If you’re not ready to fall asleep just yet, read a book or flick through a magazine.
Rethink your bed
Perhaps one of the most common causes of a lack of a good night’s sleep is an uncomfortable bed. Whether the mattress is too hard, the bedding is itchy, or you’re not warm enough, it’s going to impact how well you sleep. So, it’s important that you take the time to rethink your bed, asking yourself whether it really is as comfortable as it could be. Focus on one area of your bed at a time, such as the mattress. If it’s old and uncomfortable, consider swapping it for a newer model. Or, if money’s too tight for that, consider investing in a mattress topper instead. Once you’ve sorted the mattress, the next step is to focus on your bedding, and why it’s not as comfortable as it could be. Are the sheets too scratchy, is the duvet tog count too low, are the pillows too lumpy- what’s the problem?
Layer your lighting
Studies have shown that the lighting in a bedroom can impact how easy it is to drift off, so getting the lighting in your bedroom right is a must. If the lights are too bright, you will struggle to fall asleep or feel relaxed. So, it’s important to layer the lighting by incorporating various light sources and brightnesses into your bedroom. If you haven’t already got a dimmer switch for your main light, it could be worth having one installed. It’s also a good idea to dot a couple of table lamps around the room so that you don’t have to have the main light on if you don’t want to. Stringing up a couple of sets of LED fairy lights could also work well for providing a low level of light that won’t impact your ability to drift off.
The good news is that turning your bedroom into the ultimate sleep retreat is much easier than you would think.
