Here in California, recycling is HUGE. It seems as though every public facility has recycling signs posted with recycling bins available. I try to do my best to sort my trash at home and to make sure the proper materials are going into the recycling bin. I try to reduce waste at home by reusing old plastic containers such as coffee creamer jugs, frozen meal containers and even sour cream containers. First of all, they make for great “distraction toys” for my daughter while I cook dinner, and secondly it’s always nice to have them for leftovers. I never seem to find a use for empty milk jugs, but I just found a company that has many uses for them.
Green Toys, out of California, uses recycled milk containers as their main ingredient in their toys. The milk containers, once recycled, are reprocessed into fresh, clean plastic. This material is called high-density polyethylene and is considered one of the safest plastics out there. Green Toys doesn’t import their materials from outside of the US which is great for the earth. They save a lot of energy and reduce greenhouse gases by using local materials. High five, Green Toys!!
Another great perk to using local, recycled materials is that it costs less money to make the toys which means they are cheaper for you and me to buy. For example, look at the toy image below. I asked my husband how much he thought the Green Toys Stacking Cups toy cost. His answer: “$20.” Next, I asked him how much he would honestly be willing to spend on that toy and his answer was “about $10.” He was right on the money. The stacking toy is only $10.99 at shop.greentoys.com
I was sent the Green Toys Stacking Cups toy to review. It comes with 6 volumetric, nesting flower shaped cups. The plastic (a) doesn’t have a weird smell; (b) is super soft to the touch but really strong; and (c) doesn’t contain BPA, Phthalates or PVC. The age suggestion for this toy is 6m+. My daughter is 14 months old and loves it.
The stacking toy is very versatile. You can take it in the bathtub, use it in the classroom for learning math, use them in the sandbox, stack the cups upside down or nest them together. There are endless possibilities with this toy. My daughter loves to pretend she’s eating and drinking out of her toys and I can feel good knowing that Green Toys doesn’t use harmful materials. Green Toys meet US and international toy safety standards.
By playing with the stacking cups, my daughter is improving her hand-eye coordination, learning her colors and numbers and improving her problem-solving skills.
Here is a fun little video of my daughter enjoying her stacking cups.
