Keeping Kids Entertained during Travel

Many of you are planning last minute summer vacations before the kids go back to school.  Summer vacations are a great opportunity for family bonding but let’s face it; kids tend to get a little bored during the traveling portion.  A great idea is to pack a “surprise” bag for each child with products that they’ve never seen before.

To keep your little caterpillars busy on a road trip or plane flight, we suggest packing books and mess-free items.  This Eric Carle Very Busy Doodle Book is a great option for older children.  Kids can color and sketch over 100 different scenes in this book and have fun with the included book of stickers.

For little hands, we love busy activities that are mess-free.  Rather than bringing products like Play-doh or coloring supplies, we suggest The Very Hungry Caterpillar Lacing Cards.  These entertaining lacing cards feature Eric Carle’s charming illustrations from his best selling book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  This set includes all of your kid’s favorite characters like the classic caterpillar and even the butterfly. Printed on thick, sturdy board, these lacing cards are durable and reusable and great for travel.  Plus, they encourage hand-eye coordination and help develop sequencing, dexterity and motor skills while keeping kids quiet for hours.

For road trips, we love The World of Eric Carle Here We Go Steering Wheel Book.  Kids can drive along with mom and dad with this adorably interactive and colorful board book.  Each spread features the story and illustration on the left hand page, while the right-hand page shows what the child sees through the “windshield” at a particular point in the story.
As far as snacks go, rather than bring along multiple bags of snacks and wind up having to store them all and having kids fight over them, we love the idea of using a utility box for each child.  Place a different snack in each compartment and let kids go to town.  We like the idea of packing healthy snacks like trail mixes, nuts, dried fruit.
