Rock the Locks Review: 5 Kids’ Hair Products We Tried

Originally published in July 2020. Updated in September 2026 with refreshed content and additional product details.

Finding kids’ hair products that can handle tangles, waves and flyaways without making hair feel heavy isn’t always easy. It’s even better when the products have colorful packaging and scents that kids actually enjoy using.

In this Rock the Locks review, I’m sharing our experience with five of the brand’s styling and conditioning products. My daughters and I tried the Not So Knotty Conditioning Detangler, Don’t Messy With Me Texture Paste, Curls Wanna Have Fun Curl Boost, Shake & Shimmer Glitter Hairspray and Total Softie Leave-In Conditioner.

Here’s what we liked, how we used each product and which ones stood out for our family.

Rocks the Locks Review: Products We Tried

Not So Knotty Conditioning Detangler

The Not So Knotty Conditioning Detangler is designed to condition the hair while helping loosen stubborn tangles. It also adds moisture, body and shine without requiring a complicated haircare routine.

This was especially helpful for my daughters during the summer. Between swimming in the pool, spending time at the beach and being outside in the sun, their hair can become dry and difficult to brush.

A few sprays of the detangler made it easier to work through knots without as much pulling. It comes in several fruity scents, including Pineapple Banana, Green Apple and Funky Fruit.

Total Softie Leave-In Conditioner

The Total Softie Leave-In Conditioner contains coconut oil and is designed to add moisture, smooth flyaways and help with detangling.

We used this product when my daughters’ hair needed a little extra softness, especially after swimming. I liked that it helped make their hair feel more manageable and gave it a smoother, shinier appearance.

If your child’s hair tends to feel dry or tangled, this is one of the most practical products in the collection.

Curls Wanna Have Fun Curl Boost

My youngest daughter has naturally wavy hair, so I used the Curls Wanna Have Fun Curl Boost to help enhance her waves and give her shorter bob more definition.

The product helped shape her natural texture without making her hair feel overly heavy. It was also helpful on humid days when her waves needed a little more control.

For the best results, I worked a small amount through damp hair and gently scrunched her waves into place.

Don’t Messy With Me Texture Paste

The Don’t Messy With Me Texture Paste adds definition, shine and hold. Although it works well for styling both girls’ and boys’ hair, I also tried it on my own hair.

When I want a more textured look, I use a flat iron to create loose, messy curls. I then rub a small amount of the texture paste between my fingertips and lightly work it through the ends of my hair before finishing with hairspray.

A little goes a long way. Starting with a small amount makes it easier to add definition without using too much product.

Shake & Shimmer Glitter Hairspray

As you can probably imagine, the Shake & Shimmer Glitter Hairspray was an instant favorite with my girls. It adds sparkle while also providing some hold and shine.

What I appreciated most was that the glitter washed out more easily than loose craft-style glitter. Anyone who has dealt with glitter stuck in a child’s hair or all over the bathroom knows what a difference that makes!

This would be a fun option for birthday parties, dance performances, spirit days, holidays or any occasion that calls for a little extra sparkle.

Tip: Shake the bottle thoroughly before applying it so that the glitter is distributed more evenly with each spray.

What We Liked About Rock the Locks

The first thing we noticed about the products was their fruity scents. According to the brand, its products are scented with essential oils. The bright packaging and playful product names also make the collection feel fun and approachable for kids.

From a parent’s perspective, I liked that the products addressed common hair concerns without adding extra steps to our routine. The detangler and leave-in conditioner were helpful for everyday haircare, while the curl boost and texture paste gave us additional styling options.

The glitter hairspray was less of an everyday necessity, but it was definitely the most exciting product for my daughters.

Which Products Worked Best for Us?

Our most-used products were the Not So Knotty Conditioning Detangler and Total Softie Leave-In Conditioner. Both helped make my daughters’ hair softer and easier to manage after swimming and spending time outside.

The Curls Wanna Have Fun Curl Boost was another favorite because it helped bring out my youngest daughter’s natural waves.

For special occasions, the Shake & Shimmer Glitter Hairspray was a fun finishing touch. Meanwhile, the Don’t Messy With Me Texture Paste was the most versatile product because I could use it on my daughters’ hair as well as my own.

About Rock the Locks

Rock the Locks was introduced by the makers of Piggy Paint, a kid-focused nail polish brand that our family has also tried in the past.

According to the company, Rock the Locks products are developed and tested by salon professionals. The brand also states that its products are made in the USA, cruelty-free and formulated without sulfates, parabens, phthalates or petrolatum.

Product formulas can change, so I always recommend reviewing the current packaging and complete ingredient list if your child has allergies, sensitivities or specific haircare needs.

Final Rock the Locks Review

Overall, we enjoyed trying the Rock the Locks kids’ hair products. The playful names, fruity scents and colorful packaging appealed to my daughters, while I appreciated having products that addressed tangles, dryness, waves and everyday styling.

The detangler and leave-in conditioner were the standouts for our family because they helped make summer hair easier to manage. The curl boost worked nicely on natural waves, and the glitter hairspray added a fun touch without leaving us with loose glitter that was impossible to remove.

If your child has tangled, wavy or difficult-to-style hair, Rock the Locks offers several products worth considering. The best choice will depend on your child’s hair type and whether you need help with moisture, detangling, definition, hold or simply a little sparkle.
