Tips for Teaching a Baby How to Swim

When thinking of my ideal vacation destination, it almost always includes a warm ocean, a clean beach, beautiful resort pools and good food.  Luckily, my family also agrees that a beach destination is the way to go.  With all of that water on vacation plus having a pool at home, teaching my girls how to swim at a young age is a must.

My husband and I started introducing Charlotte to the water when she was just about six months old.  She’s now four and can swim pretty well on her own.  She absolutely loves our pool at home and enjoys the kid’s pools at resorts.  Now, my youngest, Kendall, is 17-months-old and I plan to start teaching her to swim this summer so she can keep up with her big sister.

For little ones, pools and learning how to swim can be intimidating.  Getting their face and ears wet is an awkward sensation when it’s outside of the bath or shower and it’s tricky to teach them to relax in the water.  I’ve been learning some helpful techniques on the SwimWays site,

The Baby Spring Float is a great step 1 tool which is available online and in-store at Toys ‘R Us.  I will be using the Spring Float to help introduce my little Kendall to the water this summer.  It packs up nicely to take on vacation with us and is the perfect floaty to keep her upright while she gets used to the water.

We all know how important it is to teach children to swim, so I’m not going to dwell too much on the safety aspects of it.  The Teach Me To Swim videos provided by SwimWays have helped give me some guidance as far as how to begin teaching my baby how to swim.  They show me what to do for each step of training and how to improve her swimming skills when she gets older. The tips and videos are even great for refreshing young swimmers’ skills after they return back to the pool after the colder months and I plan to share them with my four-year-old.

I look forward to sharing our swimming journey with you all and letting you know how the SwimWays Spring Floats works for us.  Stay tuned for an update in the next few months!
