5 Common Skincare Myths – Debunked

This post is part of a sponsored series for Metrin.  As always, all opinions are my own and are not to be taken as medical advice.
Metrin Skincare Products

As you will know from my previous posts, I’ve been trying out the 5-step skincare system from Metrin. Although it sounds like a lot of work to many people, it’s actually an easy and quick routine to follow. To change things up a bit this time around, I thought I would go more in-depth about some of the skincare rumors and myths that are floating around. This post was inspired by the Metrin Instagram page, which has a lot more wonderful skincare tips.

If you need some help figuring out fact from fiction, here are some of Metrin’s myths and some of my own. I’ve aimed to get to the truth behind them.

Chocolate Makes You Break Out

This myth is such a common one, you’re sure to have heard it in one form or another. Sometimes chocolate might be replaced with other junk food, from cookies to candy. The truth is that there is no evidence that eating chocolate will directly make your skin worse. However, there is some truth to this myth. Research shows that too much insulin, caused by a high-sugar diet, can lead to acne breakouts.

High SPF Gives You Better Protection

We all know the importance of protecting our skin in the sun. However, some people think that a higher SPF sunscreen means they can stay in the sun longer or that they’re better protected. It’s true that a higher SPF gives you better protection against UVA rays, but you need a sunscreen that combats UVB rays too. You also don’t get to stay out in the sun longer with a high SPF product.

Skin Damage Stops After Age 18

This myth is a bit of a strange one, but some people believe it. Anyone over 18 can attest to the fact that it’s not true! Your skin can still be damaged by the sun as an adult, and of course, it will continue to age and can still scar. We often talk about the dangers of children getting blistering sunburns and how that might make them more susceptible to skin care later in life. This is most likely how this myth came about.

Scrubbing with Soap Gets You Healthy Skin

A lot of people believe that vigorously scrubbing your face with soap will get you healthier skin. The truth is that it’s likely to do the opposite instead. If you scrub too hard with a harsh soap, you’ll remove the natural oils and protective barriers. What’s more important is to establish a skincare routine using a gentle cleanser. Find products that work for you and stick with them, instead of experimenting with lots of different ones. Also, give your new products longer than a few weeks to see if they’re working for you. Sometimes your skin might react simply due to the change in routine or products.

Always Choose the Most Expensive Products

I’ve seen some expensive skin products in my time. Some are even made with real gold. But many of them don’t seem much different from more affordable ones. I was relieved to find that the price of the Metrin 5-step system was so affordable, because many similar products are so much more expensive. Sometimes, all you’re paying for is the name on the bottle or the celebrity endorsements. The ingredients inside can be much the same or even better from product to product. So you should make your choice based on what’s in the bottle, like Metrin’s fragrance-free and dye-free products.

I’ve been using their products since April (yes the product has lasted that long) and you all know that I swear by them. The 5-step system sounds like a pain, but it really isn’t. The bottles recommend that you use a warm, wet washcloth to remove the products from your face, which is way less messy than the “splash your face” method.

It’s not always easy to separate fact from fiction. If you want to keep things straight, choose an honest brand that won’t try to fool you. As I mentioned above, Metrin’s Instagram page is a helpful resource for your skincare needs. Even if you choose not to purchase their products, their skincare tips alone are great.
